I'm trying to put together a good playlist for the reception (once the musicians have packed up their instruments and settled in to eat tasty foods), and it's becoming rapidly apparent that my iTunes is severely lacking in this department. Nor do I really have a good idea of what constitutes a decent dance mix. Granted, by this point in the reception I fully expect a lot of people to be off playing games, but since there will be some dancing, I'd like to have a good list put together.

Suggestions? Artists, genres, particular songs that really ought to be played? Otherwise it's likely to be a playlist called The Shame of My iTunes, Vol. I. And if you must suggest ridiculous songs -- 4'33" is right out -- could you also give a few serious ones as well?

(Left unlocked so as to cast a wider net. Internet! Inform me!)

i think ours was more informed by "music that's significant to us" than specifically dance-y, but i can look up the list when i get home.

(of course, we also didn't end up using it, because elh was having such a good time they just played until the bitter end. which means i didn't get to play "blood wedding" (oysterband) at my reception... which disappoints me but is probably for the best :)

We're hoping to go for that, but I know we've got family and friends who'd like to dance. And hm...maybe I'll look that up.

Also, there is always the Imperial March. That is a good dance song.

CARAMELLDANSEN.

I'm serious.

In addition, here's a few things...

Glenn Miller, Hooked on Swing
perhaps some Dropkick Murphys?
Spaceman, The Killers or When You Were Young
Smooth Criminal
Shake It
(You realize I'm just looking through stuff you've given me that you like, right?)
The Middle or Big Casino
Rasputin
Shake Your Groove Thing
Killer Queen?
Mr. Fancy Pants
Ana Ng
Dancing With Myself
Numa Numa Song
Love Today or Grace Kelly
Here It Goes Again
Moskau
Strange Weirdos (awww, slow dance)
some Diana KRall for Dad and Mom
Electric Avenue
Blues Brothers singing Gimme Some Lovin'
Crazy (Gnarls Barkley, not Patsy Cline)
Tom Jones singing Kiss

hee.

You're not serious.

Are you?

Oh shit you're serious. Only if you and I get to dance to it.

Thanks for the rest of the suggestions! I'm slowly putting together a playlist -- I was thinking "Don't Stop Me Now" instead of "Killer Queen," though.

Songs which generally get our crowd dancing:

- the cantina dance from Star Wars
- Hey Ya, by Outkast
- the mashup Bootystition (Bootylicious + Stevie Wonder + something else - it is awesome)
- Shake Your Groove Thing (Peaches and Herb?)
- It's Raining Men (but get Yao to send you his 3-minute cut, which is better than the 7-minute original)
- Beng Beng Beng, by Fela Kuti

And I second the Numa Numa song (actually called Dragostin Din Te), Dancing With Myself, Electric Avenue...

*I* second TMBG, and It's Rainin' Men. I would also (fairly seriously) recommend Rock Lobster, and also The Time Warp, both of which are staples at...the dance at a certain annual conference.

You could always include a little Diana Krall or Michael Buble or something so M&D get a chance to dance.

Diana Krall, definitely. And some Louis Armstrong too.

I don't know about the Bubbly guy on account of I can't think of him other than Bubbly.

Well...it certainly worked at one wedding I went to. Great Big Sea! (Everybody dances.) Something else! (Everybody stops and talks.) Great Big Sea! (Everybody dances.) Something else! (Everybody stops and talks, and the DJ scratches his head and goes, "The hell?")

I, uh, could bring a selection thereof if you would like. I do have, I believe, every one of their released albums. Can put on thumb drive for easy access, even.

Ordinary Day

And any one or two of the following, perhaps:
Jack Hinks
Mari-Mac
Run Runaway
The Old Black Rum

YMMV

IMHO, you can't go wrong with most tracks from "Red Hot + Blue," the 1990 Cole Porter tribute album featuring covers by U2, David Byrne, the Pogues, and many others. (Hearing Tom Waits sing "It's All Right With Me" is something else.)

Of course, musical preferences vary widely from person to person. For a big wedding, you might want to go with more mainstream or older material.

P.S. If you're still looking for the "Bootystition" mash-up: http://www.btinternet.com/~scott.akister/mashups/bootystition04_mash-ups_co_uk.mp3
