I had a fantastic time at Boskone this year, and I fully intend to put up a con report later tonight. (Once I get home through the blizzard.)

In the meantime, though, here's something completely trivial:

I wanted coffee. It's snowing, and cold, and I'm tired, so I wanted coffee.

So I went to the cafeteria. That's where they have coffee. At least in the mornings. They have many coffees. Sometimes they have coffees that are supposed to crunch, at least according to the coffee name. I don't understand this.

But that's not important now.

They didn't have any coffee. That's okay. I have learned to live with many disappointments.

One of the things that helps me with these disappointments, specifically the coffee disappointments, is the hot cocoa machine. It makes hot cocoa. You push the button and it goes whoosh and there's hot cocoa. It even says "Delicious Hot Chocolate" on the front but we know that means hot cocoa.

It's okay. It could be better. But it's hot cocoa.

So I got a cup and I brought it to the hot cocoa machine. I pushed the button and it went whoosh.

It was hot water. A cup full of hot water, with a few little flakes that might have been chocolate, once, back in the old country.

The cafeteria staff had cleaned out the hot cocoa machine for the weekend. It didn't have any hot chocolate. It had only SAD.

And now I had a cup that was FULL OF SAD and nothing but SAD with a few SAD FLAKES in it. I WANTED COFFEE BUT I GOT SAD. WITH SAD FLAKES.

I AM NOW SAD.

But cute! And therefore a perfect antidote.

All the main cafeterias at school run out of caffeinated tea after lunch. It's the weirdest thing! No one can restock after 1:30pm? No one needs coffee after 1:30pm? Please, the undergrads probably get up at 1:30pm.

Okay, that's just weird. Not even plain black tea? Not even Lipton's? The mind boggles.

You should call your assistant and ensure that tasty hot beverage is waiting for you upon your return.

Actually, it ended up working the other way. But now I know how to make a hot toddy!

SAD FLAKES! WOE!

In non-sad-- I have watched Hot Fuzz, and it is brilliant.

And I have read Un Lun Dun, and it is very clever, especially the giraffes. It didn't really pick up for me until Deeba took over-- the Zanna chapters were pretty by-the-numbers for me, despite some good wordplay (highfish!) But Deeba listening to the book's plot-coupon outline and deciding to go straight for the last one was worth the price of admission.

Yay! I'm glad you liked both -- Deeba is one of my favorite characters now.

I hope it is comforting that your tale of SAD made me laugh. :) I hope you are now home and finally enjoying tasty hot beverage.

I only just read this and shared it with N - he thought you should know that your tale, while undoubtedly SAD, is told in such a way that it is full of AWESOME.

It probably works best if you read it in a Milton-from-Office-Space voice.
