Why, yes, I am a raving fangirl. Why do you ask?

Apparently 20th Century Fox is making a movie of The Dark Is Rising, beginning filming later this month and due for release in late September.  Given the mixed track record of recent adaptations (*coughEarthseacough*), I'm not sure if I should look forward to it, since there's every chance they could screw it up big time.

However, I do note that they've cast Christopher Eccleston as The Rider.

Christopher Eccleston.

As The Rider.

Suddenly, I have hope for that movie.

Did you know that The Dark Is Rising was the book that turned me into the geek that I am today?* Well, now you do.

Sorry I won't be seeing you at Boskone this year, by the way.

*Although D'Aulaire's Greek Myths got there waay first and should be credited with the assist.

I had no idea. I first encountered it as an audio version in second grade, when the fifth grade teacher* played it for us. I can still remember the "strange, bell-like music" that played at certain points, and the voice of the Walker.

Too bad about Boskone. Maybe I should come to one of the cons in the New York area sometime. (Probably not this year, though, since I'm planning on going to Wiscon and that's eating most of my con budget.)

I didn't read D'Aulaire's Greek Myths until college, when [livejournal.com profile] wavyarms introduced it to me. There were several other books of Greek mythology, though, including one of the Voyage of the Argonauts, with beautiful, simple line drawings. I should check to see if any of those books made it through the big garage sale purges back home.

*Long story.

Not that I've actually been to Romania, but that sounds like an intriguing choice of venue. Is it foggy there very often (possibly because of the Black Sea)? Now I need to reread the whole series.

Ask Sally once she gets back. Moldova is close to Romania, and it's possible they have similar climates.

And yeah, I need to reread it. Soon.

You've never read The Dark Is Rising??

I'm agog.

[identity profile] cybersattva.livejournal.com 2007-02-16 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Never heard of it 'til today.

But it looks like I would have luuuuurved it 20-25 years ago.

(You have no idea how much it pains me to say that.)

[identity profile] kmunson779.livejournal.com 2007-02-16 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
You could still love it now... I reread mine about once every couple of years.

[identity profile] stealthmuffin.livejournal.com 2007-02-16 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd second the recommendation; it's a good series, and this particular book is excellent.

Also, agog. (I'm not necessarily agog, but I just wanted to say "agog" again.)

Goga.
