This explains my love of cheese.
Oct. 9th, 2005 10:53 amIt was mildly humbling, while watching Curse of the Were-Rabbit (the new Wallace and Gromit movie) with
thomascantor last night, to realize that our relationship maps well onto Wallace and Gromit's -- and I'm not Gromit. I shall now start wearing knit vests and go bald.
J and I went out to see it for our anniversary (It is so a date movie. Shut up.) and then went out to dinner. The movie was more detailed than the earlier Aardman shorts, but the tone was still there (especially the tone of A Close Shave), mixed liberally with the tone of B-level horror movies. Many jokes on many levels, from subtle visual puns to very broad humor, and a little more of the latter than was the case in the earlier shorts. Those who liked the sheep in A Close Shave may find some echoes of them in this movie's bunnies.
The movie's slightly racier than the shorts. Yes, I know, it's claymation and Aardman, how in heck can it be racy? Well, there are vegetables involved. And nutritional warning labels. Still, I can't remember the last time I both got caught off guard by nun wrestling and ended up discussing the coloration of WWI fighter planes. I'd heard one complaint that the movie felt like a stretched-out version of the shorts, but I never got that impression.
All in all, a few flaws, but I laughed pretty much all the way through.
And then we came home, ate tiramisu from Finale, drank port, and watched more Lost. Life is good.
Still plugging along on the revisions, still plugging along on the job search, still terrified about what's going to happen after October. Two interviews last week, one of which I got a call back for a second interview while I was on the way home from the first. That's very encouraging, but I can't let myself start to hope. Instead, I shall think about how to smooth over the death of Informative Old Guy in the next chapter. And whether I can leave the phrase "Viking inventor of pasties" in till the next draft.
