So [livejournal.com profile] 2h2o posted a meme a while ago, and I'm only just now getting around to it. The general idea of the meme: you are making a mix cd to introduce yourself to someone. What's on it?

I may be breaking the rules of this a bit in two ways. First, I don't have all of these songs, so I can't measure length to be absolutely sure they would fit on one cd. Second, I'm annotating one or two songs, just to be clear why I'm putting them on. Yes, I know that defeats the purpose somewhat, but I must assuage my deep-seated need to explain. Order of songs is a little off, but I figure if I were to make this mix, I'd have leeway to rearrange them as I saw fit.

“Sleepy Maggie,” Ashley MacIsaac
“Paperback Writer,” The Beatles. ‘Nuff said.
“Sensitive Artist,” King Missile. ‘Nuff still said.
“Birdhouse in Your Soul,” TMBG -- Of all the Johns’ songs, this is the one that will always make me grin. When I hear it, part of me is always thirteen and bouncing.
“47 Ginger-Headed Sailors,” from Jeeves and Wooster.
The opening theme to Babylon 5, third season. (This is the one with the DUN-DUN-DAAH! DUN-DUN-DAAH!, right?) Because anyone who wants to know me has to be warned that I’m a colossal geek.
“A Different Drum,” by Peter Gabriel.
“The Pants Song,” by MST3K. See above re: colossal geek.
“I’d Do Anything For Love,” by Meat Loaf. This is because there is a Velveeta streak in me a mile wide. I like cheesy music, cheesy movies, and cheesy books. I refuse to feel bad.
“Strange Currencies,” by REM.
“Sing Sing J. Edgar Hoover,” performed by the Kronos Quartet
“Night of the Electric Insects,” by George Crumb, performed by the Kronos Quartet
“Veit Ek At Ek Hekk,” by Sequentia -- It’s Odin’s rune-verses set to music. On one level, both the music and the subject matter communicate something about me. On another, it’s long, hard to understand, and often discordant, like my usual tirades.
A clip of J.R.R. Tolkien reading from the chapter “The Shadow of the Past” out of The Fellowship of the Ring.
A clip of Gir saying “The knowledge...it fills me...it is neat.”
“Always the First to Die,” which is an apparently anonymous song on the Net concerning the trouble with playing a mage in D&D.
“As Cool As I Am,” Dar Williams.
“The Ambient One,” The Bobs.
“Pavane for a Dead Princess,” by Ravel, played by the Canadian Brass
“March of the Ents,” by Howard Shore.
“All My Friends Are Fuckups,” by the Whitlams. Em knows the real name of this song, but this is how I know it. And that's fuckups in the nicest sense possible, of course.
“All the Way to Heaven,” by Melissa Etheridge
“Amazed,” by Poe.

Wow. This is wonderful. :-) Sometime when I am not about to go to bed, I will give some thought to this, because it would be fun to do this meme myself...

"All my friends are fuckups, but they're fun to have around...." I'd nearly forgotten that song. For some unfathomable (at least to a Yank) reason, it's called "You Sound Like Louis Burdett."

I don't want to pledge other people's money, but it might be fun to exchange actual CDs of these songs at some point.
